When children start to toddle and begin to take their first steps, a whole new world has opened up to them. They can now explore and touch objects that capture their imagination. It’s one of the most amazing experiences for a parent, but also stressful with children often learning first hand how to be careful. In this newsletter, we look at some tips and possible lessons to learn for young children and parents.
What age for swimming lessons?
by Monica Ho Ehlers

"Providing very young children with swimming lessons appears to have a protective effect against drowning and does not increase children's risk of drowning," reported researchers at the National Institutes of Health.
How to stop thumbsucking
by Karen Deerwester
Parents can help children conquer thumb sucking by teaching important developmental skills. Around 4 or 5 years of age, parents can teach children other ways to express emotions, other ways of self-soothing and relaxing, and other things to do with their hands. Children learn to stop thumb sucking when they are emotionally empowered to act with self-care and self-control, not because grown-ups disapprove.

All new parents should start thinking about baby proofing their homes, even before their precious bundles start expressing their natural curiosity.
